4. 2023 NPORS Methodology for the National Public Opinion Reference Survey ( NPORS )-

Pew Research Center polled 5, 733 U.S. 5, 2023 to better know how Americans use social media. Using address-based sampling and a multimode protocol that included both web and mail, Ipsos conducted this National Public Opinion Reference Survey ( NPORS ) for the Center. This approach almost all adults in the United States are classified according to sex, contest, and nationality, schooling, and additional factors from May 19 to September. Individuals have a choice, if they choose. The survey's representativeness is considered to be.

Telephone surveys were conducted between 2000 and 2021. Read our Q&A for more information on this setting switch.

Here are the queries, responses, and strategy used in this study.

A word of caution regarding nomenclature: When Online changed its name to "X," our May-September 2023 study was already in use. In this review, the term" Online" and" X" speak to the same software.

For the latest survey data on social media use among U.S. adults, see "Americans use social media, according to Wikipedia 2025."

In recent years, there have been a number of controversys surrounding social media platforms, including fears about misconceptions and statistics protection. Additionally, TikTok's customer foundation increased, according to reports from some members of Congress calling it" a restrictions." Perhaps so, Americans use a variety of websites and apps, particularly Facebook and YouTube.

These conclusions were gathered from a Pew Research Center survey of 5, 733 American people from May 19 through September 5, 2023.

Which social media sites do Americans use most? Roughly eight-in-ten U.S. adults (83%) report ever using the video-based platform.

The most popular net program in our review is largely YouTube.

Social is a strong participant in the online world, despite having a smaller share of people who use it. The majority of Americans ( 68 % ) identify with using social media.

Furthermore, 47 % of American parents claim to use Instagram.

Although the other websites and apps that were mentioned are less popular, a sizable percentage of Americans nevertheless use them:

About one-in-five Americans say they use Twitter ( recently renamed" X" ) and Reddit. People use Whatsapp, TikTok, Linked In, and Pinterest.

For the first time in this year, we inquired about the 2020 photo-based system BeReal. Only 3 % of adults in the United States use it.

Latest research from the Center for Social Media reveals that YouTube even has a significant impact on the social press panorama for teenagers in the United States.

Since 2021, TikTok has grown.

TikTok, one app, stands out for expanding its customer bottom. A third of American adults ( 33 % ) identify as using the video-based platform, up 12 percentage points from 2021 ( 21 % ).

Over the past few years, the different websites that I asked around have experienced more humble or no progress. For illustration, despite the dominance of Facebook and YouTube on the cultural press scene, the proportion of adults using these websites has remained constant since 2021.

The Center has been keeping track of website platform usage for many years. Modest modifications can have a number of effects on research benefits, so we need to be mindful when looking at how issues have or haven't changed since our most recent investigation on these subjects in 2021. Kindly examine our Q&A for more information about this move. Lately, we switched from using the phone to sending emails and letters to gather messages.

Stark era distinctions in how people use each app or website

Individuals under the age of 30 are much more plausible than their older peers to employ numerous net channels. These studies are in line with earlier Center info.

Age spaces between people under 30 and those using Instagram, Snap, and TikTok, which are the most prevalent systems, are particularly big. For instance:

- 78 % of 18- to 29-year-olds claim to use Instagram, a much higher percentage than the average age group and 65 ( % ). Only 4 % of the country's oldest age group reported using Snapchat, Hotpussy compared to 65 % of U.S. adults under the age of 30. 62 % of 18- to 29-year-olds use TikTok, which is significantly higher than the percentage of adults over 65 years old ( 10 % ). For all three systems, Americans between the ages of 30 to 49 and 50 to 64 fall somewhere in the middle.

Merely two channels are used by the majority of people of all ages are Facebook and YouTube. Despite this, there is still a significant years difference between the youngest and oldest people when it comes to YouTube apply. However, the years difference between Social and users is substantially smaller.

Americans between the ages of 30 and 49 prefer using Instagram, WhatsApp, and LinkedIn at higher charges. For example, 40 % of people in this age range use Linked In, compared to the almost three-in-ten people between the ages of 18 to 29 and 50 to 64. Only 12 % of those over 65 share this opinion.

Ultimately, the majority of young individuals use several websites and apps. This is far higher than the shares of those ages 30 to 49 ( 53 % ), 50 to 64 ( 30 % ), and ages 65 and older ( 8 % ) who say the same. At least five of the platforms that were questioned use about three-quarters of adults under the age of 30 ( 74 % ).
