HUD has rental help and housing resources through the general public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher programs.

Housing Choice Voucher (typically understood as Section 8)

- The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program helps low-income households, the elderly, and the handicapped to pay for good, safe and sanitary housing in the personal market. Housing help is supplied through HUD on behalf of the household or individual, so participants can discover their own housing. You can use an HCV to pay for all or part of the lease.

Eligibility: Public Housing is restricted to low-income households and individuals. A Public Housing Authority identifies eligibility based upon 1) annual gross earnings, 2) whether you certify as elderly, a person with disabilities or as a family, and 3) U.S. citizenship or eligible migration status.

To use, contact your regional Public Housing Authority. During the application procedure, a Public Housing Authority will gather details on household earnings, assets and household structure. The General Public Housing Authority will utilize this info to figure out program eligibility and the amount of the housing assistance payment.
