Antibiotic resistance in Nigeria is escalating due to urban‑rural disparities in healthcare access, misuse of antibiotics without prescription, and weak diagnostic infrastructure. In urban centres, easy over‑the‑counter access and self‑medication fuel resistance, while in rural areas, limited awareness, scarce laboratory services, and reliance on informal providers add to the burden. The Nigerian National Antimicrobial Stewardship Taskforce (NNAST) is tackling these issues by strengthening regulation, enhancing surveillance, educating both healthcare workers and the public, and expanding antimicrobial stewardship programs to reach underserved areas. Addressing antibiotic resistance in Nigeria demands coordinated efforts to protect health outcomes across all regions.
